KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain has appealed to ulema of various schools of thought to stop their demonstrations after clear assurances by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani that no amendment is being made in the blasphemy law. He was addressing via telephone from London to an assembly of the office bearers of various wings of his party at Khursheed Begum Memorial Hall at Azizabad, said a statement issued by MQM here Tuesday. He said Islam is a religion of peace and it gives us lesson to respect all religions. Islam not only gives a message of peace to the Muslims but also guarantees peace and security to the non-Muslims, he added. He was of the view that history tells us that kings, monarchs and rulers have always exploited religion to legitimize their rule and perpetuate their power. He said the Holy Prophet (pbuh) brought mercy and blessings for all and also treated non-Muslims, even his enemies well. He said his party respects all schools of thought and it has been working for the last 32 years to promote interfaith harmony. Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has categorically stated in a press conference that the government is bringing no change to the blasphemy law. He appealed to ulema to stop protests after clear assurance by the Prime Minister that no amendment is being made in the blasphemy law. Altaf said he has always preached peace, security, dignity of human beings and moderation as told in the Holy Quran and enunciated by the Holy Prophet (PBUH). “I have always maintained that whoever you are and whatever sect you belong to or whatever school of thought you subscribe to, you should respect everyone. Do not hate anyone.” he said. He said “Everyone has a right to live. You must all adore Allah according to your way. It is for Allah to judge as to who is right and who is wrong. It is for Allah to decide as to who will go to heaven and who will go to hell on the Day of Judgment and not for man.” He said the extremists want to destroy the environment of tolerance and inter-faith harmony in Pakistan particularly in Sindh and want to promote intolerance but while MQM is yet present, they would not succeed. He said the MQM is a political party that believes in tolerance and inter-faith harmony. We are not only working for unity among Muslims but also unity among various faiths as well. We want to promote moderation and establish an environment where people respect religious sentiments of others, he said. We should not only revere mosques and imam bargahs but also give protection to all other places of worship. The Jamat-e-Islami has categorically asked the Muttahida Qaumi Movement to clear its position regarding Namoos-e-Risalat law instead of asking religious parties to stop protesting against the issue. The reaction of JI came in the wake of statement of Chief of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Altaf Hussain in which he had demanded religious parties to discontinue their campaign against blasphemy law as the government, especially the Prime Minister of Pakistan has clearly said that blasphemy law would not be revoked. The JI asked Altaf Hussain to pressurise the coalition government to announce on the floor of the House that the blasphemy law would not be repealed. PESHAWAR, Jan 9: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement was blackmailing the government as it could not survive without power, alleged Qazi Hussain Ahmad, the former chief of Jamaat-i-Islami. Speaking at a function here on Sunday, he said that it was understood that MQM would rejoin the government. He said that MQM had been using such tactics since long and resignation from the cabinet was also a drama. “MQM cannot survive without government,” he said. He opposed in-house change in the parliament, saying it would not bring any change in the existing system, which was based on injustice. Qazi said that late governor of Punjab should not have used derogatory language by calling blasphemy law a “black law”. He said that Namoos-i-Risalat was most sensitive issue for Muslims across the world and late government should not have used such words. He said that blasphemy law should not be abolished otherwise it would create anarchy in the society. He said that in the absence of law people could also punish innocent persons. “That`s why government should not touch this law. Muslims have always provided protection to minorities,” he added. KARACHI: A number of eminent religious leaders have invited the Army to intervene and take over control of Karachi. Addressing a joint press conference at the Khatme Nabuwwat office here on Sunday, religious leaders questioned the silence of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on the issue. They said not only are the residents of Karachi, but all the people of Pakistan, are also suffering from intense pain to see the unending series of senseless killings in the city which has assumed the form of the worst kind of barbarism. The religious leaders included: Mufti Mohammad Taqi, Mufti Mohammad Naeem, Qari Mohammad Usman, Maulana Tanveerul Haq Thanvi, Maulana Abdul Mannan, Maulana Azizur Rehman and Maulana Yusuf Kasuri. “Innocent people are terrified and scared. Even those who have absolutely nothing to do with politics or communal prejudices are kidnapped and subjected to the worst type of torture. A bus full of passengers was torched in which a number of poor passengers were burnt alive,” they said. “The series of barbarism seems to have no end. The administration, police and even Rangers are behaving like silent spectators. It seems that terrorists have been given a free hand.” They said in these circumstances if government, army and people do not act jointly, ‘we will be fast sliding down the abyss of destruction’. Therefore we appeal to all patriotic sections of society that they should play their due role in view of the grim situation. We also appeal to ulema, imams and khateebs of mosques to educate people and promote love and brotherhood through their sermons in the light of Holy Quran and Sunnah. They should also use their influence to reconcile the warring parties in the light of divine ordains and Holy Quran and Sunnah. “We also appeal to the common man not to lend ears to rumours which are often baseless and become the root and cause of death and destruction.” The religious scholars made a fervent appeal to every Pakistani to beg forgiveness of Allah Almighty and mould their lives in accordance with the teachings of our great religion. “We must take advantage of the holy month of Ramazan and bow down before Allah Almighty so that He takes pity on our ordeal,” they concluded.
